POP Art Revisited |
April
20 - May 27
|
|
Pop Art is short for POPular Art – the
use of cultural images in art such as comic books,
advertisements,
famous monuments and images from
television, film and music. This 1950’s art movement
shows Americans’ fascination with popular culture,
celebrating objects we see everyday and turning them
into art forms themselves.
Fifty years later,
NoHo Gallery LA
will celebrate the legacy of Pop Art with works by
featured artist Angela Richard and local, L.A.
artists. Taking it a
step farther, the exhibit will also highlight artists
who
use “popular” or new techniques to create
their art. To show the true "staying" power of POP Art,
the Gallery will debut student's artwork from Cleveland
Humanities Magnet.

The Legacy of POP Art
“I am a mid-west girl, self-taught artist. Blending
objects and icons from the modern to the old pop
culture, with a cool and edgy look, my work
challenges viewers’ ideas of “objects of art.” I
have been influenced by other artists and other
styles but pop art has always made the greatest
impact on me. I believe it is relevant today as it
ever was. I began working in this style in 1991, and
each day brings new challenges with each painting,
giving me great satisfaction as an artist,”
says Angela Richard.
Angela Richard is a native Canadian, reared on the
plains of the mid-west. In 1991, Angela moved to
Silverlake,
CA, and began to paint and experiment with colors,
techniques and styles. She spent hours studying
books of famous artists and found her main
influences were great pop artists Andy Warhol, James
Rosenquist, Marisol and Robert Rauschenberg.
She started developing a strong individual style,
realizing she was exploiting ready made objects of
the modern and old pop culture. Driven even that
much more to learn, she spent hours at museums and
art galleries of Los Angeles and New York City.
Armed with a keen eye for objects, she started
painting these objects on a larger scale, her
projects have received attention from private
collectors around the world and some celebrities
such as John Waters. She has found her unique,
strong, individual style and is getting recognition
for her paintings. |

NoHo Gallery LA is Proud to Exhibit
the Following Artists:
The Gallery will also exhibit the POP artworks of
students from the prestigious Cleveland Humanities
Magnet Studio Art Class instructed by Melanie Miller.
The select seniors have created POP art projects to
complement their classical/humanities studies of 1950's
socio-economic history, literature, philosophy
and art movements.
"The students at
Cleveland
Humanities Magnet receive the highest level of
instruction in art history and classical studies. They
have studied the POP art movement, its origins and
effects. Through Ms. Miller's instruction, they are
continuing the legacy of POP art, and for that, we are
proud to exhibit their work in the Gallery,"
says Gallery Director, Daniel
C. DeBevoise.
