Dave Malkoff joined CBS 2 and
KCAL 9 in April of 2007 from our
sister station
WFOR-TV in Miami. Dave is a
four time Emmy award-winning
journalist who takes a unique
approach to television
storytelling. "I have a strong
belief in telling stories
through the words of the people
who lived them. I believe every
relevant news story deserves to
be well told… not just
reported."
How long has Dave Malkoff been
working in broadcasting?
Technically since 1986. That's
when, as a boy, he built a
low-power pirate radio station
in the basement of his
Youngstown, Ohio home. Dave
named his station WDCM-AM.
Between 1st and 11th grades,
Dave found himself working at
local radio stations for free…
doing anything he could to learn
more about broadcasting.
In 11th grade, Dave built
another station. This time it
was a television station. The
Liberty Local School District in
Youngstown gave Dave Malkoff a
grant to build a school
television station… the first in
the district. WLHS-TV 3 is still
operating today.
In 1993, Dave got his first
paycheck from a television
station. It was also a CBS
station. WKBN-TV in Youngstown
hired the high school junior to
operate a studio camera and
create graphics for the
newscasts. In less than a year,
Dave moved into his first news
job. He became a writer for WYTV,
the ABC affiliate literally down
the street. They were still
using typewriters back then.
In 1995, Dave moved to Columbus,
Ohio where he majored in
political science at The Ohio
State University. Not only did
he go to school full-time, but
Dave also worked full-time for
another CBS station, WBNS-TV in
Columbus. "The life of an
associate producer at 10TV is
very much like journalism
boot-camp. I wouldn't be the
journalist I am today without
what I learned in Columbus."
Dave began his work as a
television news reporter right
after college. He moved to
Champaign, Illinois where he
spent a year as a
reporter/photographer at the NBC
affiliate, WICD-TV.
In 2000, Dave moved west to one
of the greatest cities on Earth…
Las Vegas. Dave spent three
years in Southern Nevada as a
reporter for the ABC station,
KTNV-TV. Dave's biggest win in
Vegas was meeting his wife
Angie… an Emmy award-winning
journalist herself.
In 2003, Dave moved west again
to San Francisco, working as a
freelance reporter from KRON-TV.
In 2004, Dave headed into the
hurricanes for CBS4 in Miami. In
less than three years, he
covered all of these storms:
Hurricane Charley, Hurricane
Frances, Hurricane Ivan,
Hurricane Jeanne, Hurricane
Dennis, Hurricane Katrina,
Hurricane Rita, Hurricane Wilma,
Tropical Storm Gamma, Tropical
Storm Alberto & Hurricane
Ernesto.
Dave is not only a reporter,
he's also an Emmy-nominated
documentary film producer,
photographer, and editor who has
created everything from local
commercials, to music videos, to
a cutting-edge reality show. He
has also designed several Web
sites including
DaveMalkoff.com. Dave is
always searching for something
new to learn. "Almost everything
fascinates me. I'll read about
anything from how hamburgers are
made to the complexity of
stellar mechanics. That's why
this is the perfect job for me."
